California Vipassana Center ~ North Fork

Image
5 days dhamma service - washing windows - taking down blinds and putting up curtains - clearing out closets - getting the center ready for summer - @ 60 people - Assistant teachers taking course + old students doing service. Taking Ambien to sleep, I could not meditate -my mind was cloudy. This is the pond on the womens' campus - water level low - very scummy video at night - sound of frogs and crickets

Academy of Science Nightlife

Cool new building but wimpy exhibits - even the planetarium was a disappointment - the equipment is state of the art but the presentation is for 8th graders- the living roof was basically a humpy grassed over terrace- Lecture on Deep Flight by Graham Hawke (submersible engineer) and Tom Perkins (venture capitalist with deep pockets and current owner The Maltese Falcon, the worlds' largest privately owned sailing yacht) - the Super Falcon is the first underwater plane - holds 2 people and doesn't go fast or far - concept is totally cool Embedded video from CNN Video notice the submersible on the stern

Francis Ford Coppola and Friends ~at the Castro

A conversation with Francis, George Lucas, Walter Murch, Carroll Ballard and Matthew Robbins talking about their beginnings as filmmakers - how they bucked (and milked) the studio system in Hollywood - and collectively came to work in the San Francisco bay area. Especially nice that four of the men's wives also came onstage and spoke a little about how they participated in these film masters' work and lives. Lovely evening - worth the $20 ticket and staying up late (for me).

Big Art Group

Strange, loud, surreal, satiric fun, in your face performance group from New York City at Yerba Buena Center - the nearly sold out audience loved it !
